The Feds don't need evidence on your hard drive to convict you of a cp crime. Even if you hard drives are encrypted (and they can't access the data on it), they can charge you for accessing or distributing cp, using the data collected in the huge data centres that control the Internet. The Feds can see everything happening online, at all times. The only reason a search warrant hasn't happened (yet) is because the person's danger level isn't high enough. It is a bad idea to download/upload certain things, because if you are accessing content that will prompt a search warrant, perhaps you shouldn't be accessing it?

They don't need evidence of real cp to convict you of cp possession. They can legally force you to reveal your Veracrypt password if they know you have real cp through forensic analysis. You can be held in contempt if you don't give them the password.
